Timnehs Clutch 15

Single Chick

hatched 12-27-17

**********

12/27/17: Ziggy hatched a single baby today.  Unfortunately the other 2 eggs are infertile. I was happy to be able to get a quick peek at the little one.

12/29/17: I see food in the crop, but not as stuffed as I'd hoped.  Ziggy doesn't really do well with single chicks.  A lot of birds are like that.  With more chicks, they get more attention and more food.

1/1/18: I was able to catch Ziggy out of the box tonight, and took the opportunity to pull the baby.  He's only 5 days old, which is certainly younger than I like to pull the kids, but I don't really trust Ziggy with doing a good job with him, and in fact I think he is not as robust as he would have been if there were clutchmates.  I weighed him and he is only 18 grams.  I fed him about an hour later when he seemed empty, and was only able to get a very tiny bit into him.  Hopefully when I feed him before bed he will do better.

1/2/18: Took a little video of the baby today.

1/3/18: Got up at 3 AM again last night and have still been feeding every 2 hours.  The little one was 20 grams this morning so it worked well! This afternoon I'm seeing a much better feeding response, too, so I am very optimistic that things are going in the right direction!

1/4/18: Baby is doing much better.  The crop is looking a bit bigger, which is no surprise given that he is actively helping to feed himself now.  What a relief.  Still doing the 3 AM feeding, but I hope maybe just a few more days of that.  Still weighed in at 20 grams this morning, so has not lost any weight.

**********

1/5/18: Still 20 grams, but feels more substantial when I hold him now.  Eating much better, too.

**********

1/6/18: The baby is 10 days old today and weighed in at a very nice 24 grams!  I took a short video of him this morning.
